Taking the Scenic Route

I love to read.  There was a time in our lives (pre-kids, of course) where my dh and I would regularly go to the library, check out a stack of 10-20 books, and then sit all night at a dive of a coffee house reading.  It was our main form of entertainment and if our noses weren’t in a textbook, it was in some sci-fi, history, fantasy, or modern fiction book.  Any one who has ever had the ‘privledge’ of moving us knows we have an insane number of volumes.  Right now there are several hundred in storage at my folk’s place, and we still have 3 full bookcases and another hundred or two in crates in our small apartment and our book buying has seriously slowed down the last couple of years.

I realized when there was a book meme going around that I don’t think I have read a single work of fiction since I had Zane, 3.5 years ago.  Everything has to do with babies, children, discipline, or sociological and psychological books that read as much like doctoral thesis as anything.  lol.  Oh…well I guess I have read fiction, just more of the ‘one fish, two fish’ variety.  No grown-up or semi grown-up books.

For such a bibliophile, it is a wonder that I have never even picked up Harry Potter.  I want to read it some day, but after the Stephen King Dark Tower series, I refuse to read any series until it is complete.  Nothing makes me more irritable than waiting to hear the end of the story.  I rarely spend more than a few days reading a book.  (granted, I read very fast) and the idea of waiting YEARS for a flippin’ ending makes me nuts.  It sucks enough to wait for the next Star Wars movie.  (at least that torture is over now)

Jennifer, the first 4 words are one of the biggest understatements I’ve read in a long time. Oh…my…goodness!!!!

“I do not like green eggs and ham…

I do not like them Sam I am.

I do not like them in a boat!

I do not like them with a goat…”

And over and over and over!!! Don’t dare skip a page, (or a line for that matter) because Jennifer will notice.

I loved reading to you. It was one of the few times you would hold still for any amount of time. You loved to have people read to you.

And the boxes of books!!! Oh…my…goodness!!! I’ll bet thats why that corner of the house is sinking. lol

One of my favorite stories of how much you like to read is from years ago when you were working at the front desk of a motel. You had put in your ‘two weeks’.  I mailed a huge 3″ (small print…to me) current best selling novel, and 2 or 3 lesser/smaller books on Monday to keep you occupied for the rest of your two weeks. Finally on Thurs I called to see if you had recieved them. You said, “Yes I did, and they were really good.” I just rolled my eyes and told you that those were supposed to last the entire 2 weeks! You had this tiny little ‘Oh, I’m sorry. It DID take me a whole night to finish them!”

I always wanted my kids to be good readers, since my mom enjoyed it so much and seemed to learn so much from books. Unfortunately I was never a ‘book’ reader. I don’t have the patience. I read magazines. I did enjoy the new Mr. Rogers book earlier this summer!

Oh, yes…I wasn’t faked out by your ’sleeping’ when you were a kid either. Often when I would come in to check you and give you a kiss ‘in your sleep’, you were trying so hard to look like you were sleeping. I just shook my head and let you think you were fooling me. Hey, maybe thats why you were so difficult to wake up on some mornings…do you suppose??? <grin>

Some day you will be at a different stage in life and you will have lots of time to read what you want to read. Believe it or not, you will wonder where THESE years went so quickly. Time has a way of doing that.

  • Jesus didn’t send his disciples out as “Christian soldiers marching as to war.” He sent them out as peacemakers, who would form circles of friendship and thereby enable people to connect with one another. That is still the primary Christian mission: better living through better circles of sharing. — Tom Ehrich
