Taking the Scenic Route

Zane had his regular peds appointment yesterday. It went pretty well.  Zane was reasonably cooperative, although he started getting grumpy as the appointment went on because he started getting hungry.  (he wouldn’t eat before we left)

She is referring us on to an pediatric allergist to see if he has food intolerances that are contributing to the softer stools.  Until we get that controlled better, we can’t really ask him to learn how to use the potty.  The allergy history in my family certainly warrants investigation of this angle.

She is also trying to get us into a developmental pediatrician, but right now the soonest we can get in is a year away.  She is going to look around to see if there is somebody else.  I am going to call Prairieview and confirm that they won’t accept my insurance because I am the resident of a different county.  That is what they told me when I called the first time, but I want to make sure the person knew what they were talking about and see what they would charge out of pocket before abandoning that route entirely.

They weren’t able to test his eyes from a distance because we couldn’t get him to focus on the chart, but when we were nearer he impressed the test-givers and the other Ped by calling the moon shape a “crescent” instead of “moon”.  lol.  (he also calls it moon sometimes, but I think it doesn’t make sense to him that the moon isn’t always that shape yet people call it ‘moon’ when they refer to shapes, which is pretty observant if you ask me!)  He passed a rudimentary screening at WSU, and we aren’t really worried about his vision since he can draw and interact on the computer the way he does.  The nurse mentioned going to the optomologist, but the doctor didn’t.  (guess I need to call back and check, but I don’t really think there is a serious problem there.  it is worth checking though if we can since I am the only person in my family not legally blind without glasses)

The nurse had a rough time checking his ears, but since we were cleared in the hearing test earlier this week they didn’t worry about it too much.  I did have to hold him again for the doctor to check his ears, but he wasn’t fighting quite as bad as he has through most of the week.  Hey, if we can try to have somebody check his ears every day for the next month, he might let somebody do it without fighting as hard.  He has had it happen almost every day this week already.

That’s really cool about the “crescent”

Yes, very observant and smart, too.

A year to get an appointment? That’s awful…
